Who We Are
St John's Lutheran Church, founded March 31, 1917, is a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri
Synod. We are community of believers in Hooker, Oklahoma centered on the
Christ's Word and Sacraments.
We accept and teach Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the
reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teaching of Luther
and the reformers can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone,
Scripture alone, Faith alone.
- Grace alone
- God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel
against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus Christ, His Son, to love the
unlovable and save the ungodly.
- Faith alone
- By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time,
Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who
hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God
creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
- Scripture alone
- The Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His
Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and
norm for Christian doctrine.
We acknowledge and accept all the canonical books of the Old Testament and
New Testament as the revealed and inerrant word of God, verbally inspired, and
submit to them as the only infallible authority in all matters of faith and
life.
We acknowledge and accept all the confessional writings of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church (see also "What
about Being a Lutheran?"), contained in the Book of Concord
[2MB pdf file] of the year 1580, as true and
genuine expositions of the doctrines of the Bible. These confessional
writings are the three Ecumenical Creeds (Apostles', Nicene and Athanasion), the
Unaltered Augsburg
Confession, the Apology of the Augsburg
Confession, the
Smalcald Articles, Luther's Large and
Small Catechism, and the
Formula of Concord.
Our Mission
It is the mission of St. John's Lutheran Church to spread the kingdom of God,
to foster Christian fellowship and love, and to serve its members. This is
accomplished through the preaching of the Word of God, the right administration
of the sacraments, and the religious instruction of youth and adults, according
to the confessional standard of the Lutheran Church.
