The "bones" are here! We are preparing to fill holes and sand the bones. Then we will need to paint and antique the bones, and also "string" the big guy up.
As many of you know, the Cimarron Heritage Center Museum Board has been planning a dynamite Dinosaur/Paleontology Exhibit for a number of years. That dream is now a reality. A Utah firm has provided casts of the skull, neck, and six dorsal vertebra, and arms (which includes hands) of the Saurophaganax specimen that was found in Cimarron County in the 1930's. The complete skeleton of this dinosaur will be in the Lloyd Noble Museum of Natural History at the University of Oklahoma. These pieces will be put together and mounted on a wall in the Dinosaur Exhibit, located near the entrance in the French Building. Staff and volunteers plan to sand, fill in holes, paint and put the armature together on the dinosaur to save money on the project. So, if you've always wanted to help with this type of project look for more news on this later.
We are very busy preparing the exhibit area. Also, the museum is currently trying to find other specimens to make this exhibit more interesting and educational. There is a good chance we will be getting a thigh bone of the Apatosaurus, from a Canadian firm. And, possibly several smaller items from the University of Oklahoma .
We recently discovered several wonderful fossils in Mrs. Opal Cox's "rock" collection. However, we are still needing fossils of all sizes and types to make this exhibit unique and exceptional to this area. So, bring on the fossils.
